Scala has also gained the right to distribute other lines distributed by ASM including Sparta Video (Gay) and Abigail Productions (Lesbian).

arco Blaze, an actor who works exclusively for TitanMen, which calls itself “a pre-eminent producer of high-end gay adult content,” couldn’t make it. Sasha Grey, the fiercely self-possessed “existentialist, pornstar, and artist” (as her MySpace page puts it), submitted a brief videotaped speech. But Levi Johnston was there in person last Wednesday night, at the Box, a burlesque club on the Lower East Side. He was one of the honorees at the first annual Fleshbot Awards, named for the sexually inclusive pornographic blog that is part of the Gawker media group. Johnston had won a “porn crossover award,” in recognition of his forthcoming appearance in Playgirl.

During last year’s Presidential campaign, Johnston became instantly famous as the future son-in-law of the governor of Alaska and, for all we knew, a prospective inhabitant of the Vice-Presidential mansion. In the end, the mansion welcomed different tenants, and eventually the marriage was called off—and so, too, was the governorship. But Johnston has a son named Tripp, who is nearly a year old, which means that Johnston is the father of the grandchild of someone people care a lot about, which makes him, by the transitive property of celebrity, someone people care a little bit about.

And, because he has sometimes been willing to share details of the time he spent with his baby’s mother and her family, he has emerged as a quasi-political figure in his own right, celebrated, if smirkingly, by people who view him as a good-looking thorn in the side of his son’s famous grandmother. Last year, he was adduced as a walking example of family values (he was, after all, doing the right thing, although perhaps in the wrong order); this year, he is sometimes seen as a walking critique of them.

Johnston sat at a small table in the balcony of the Box, flanked by two immovable African-American men wearing suits. They were not bodyguards, or, in any case, not merely bodyguards. Tank Jones (pink tie) is Johnston’s manager, agent, life coach, wardrobe consultant, whatever; Tank’s brother, Marvin (black tie), is Johnston’s personal trainer.

All three peered over the railing at a snippet from “Pirate’s Booty,” an all-male animated adventure (starring Captain Jack Swallows) that was named the year’s sexiest computer-generated movie. Tank Jones explained that, once Johnston collected his award, they would be gone. “Like a fart in the wind,” he said.

Intermission arrived. The Johnston crew headed outside to Chrystie Street. A few paparazzi materialized, and Jones issued ground rules for interviews. (No questions about Tripp’s custody, which is now a matter of dispute, or about his grandmother.) Jones has met a lot of people who are surprised to see a black man from Alaska, but he has a simple explanation: “Anywhere you got military bases, you know you’re going to have some black people.”

He is—or was—a criminal investigator, and he found Johnston through his mother, who had, he says, “some criminal problems” last year. (She is now incarcerated, having pleaded guilty to a felony drug charge.) Jones asked Johnston if he needed help dealing with the media, and Johnston said that he didn’t. Two weeks later, he changed his mind.

“It just didn’t stop,” Johnston said. “I had to do something.”

So Jones went to work, in collaboration with a lawyer from Anchorage. “I told him, ‘Look, put my number on your door. Anyone looking for you, they can call me.’ That was a mistake.” Jones’s phone started ringing. Johnston did “The Tyra Banks Show,” GQ, “Larry King Live,” and numberless interviews; Jones says they turned down a record contract and more than one reality show.

The phone still rings all the time. “Right while we standing here now,” Jones said, offering his smashed-up BlackBerry for inspection. “You see that crack in my phone? That’s because I threw it up against the wall.”

Back inside, Johnston posed for a picture with the determinedly ubiquitous socialite Tinsley Mortimer—accidental fame, side by side with its opposite. Soon, he ascended to accept his award (a stainless-steel objet d’art based on a fearsomely functional product known as the Eleven), and delivered a brief speech. “I’m honored to be here,” he said. “Make sure y’all go and get that new Playgirl next week.” The ceremony ended with its only transgressive moment: a riveting performance by the porn actress and director Belladonna, who demonstrated the flexibility of her legs and her larynx. But by that time Johnston and the Joneses were gone—carried away, no doubt, by the unceasing demands of do-it-yourself celebrity, and by the brisk November wind.  ♦
